Madonna was born and grew up in Bay city Michigan. her mother died when she was 5. in 1977 she moved to New York to chase a carrer in dance. in 1979 she joined as part of the Patrick Hernandez Revue and studied with choreographer Alvin Ailey. with Patrick Hernandez she travelled to Paris, it was there that she met Dan Gilroy, who would soon become her boyfriend.
the pair returned to New york and formed the band the Breakfast club. she started on the drums but soon made her way to lead singer.
in 1980 she left the band and began working on pop/dance oriented tracks. a demo tape of these made its way to Mark Kamins, a dj/producer. kamins directed the tape to Sire records during 1982. this was the beginning of Madonna's long and grand carrer.
Kamins produced Madonnas first single 'everbody' which became a club hit, this was closely followed by 'phsical attraction' and in 1983 'holiday'. 'borderline' became her first top ten hit in march 1984. this was followed by a string of 17 hits.
Madonna began work on her first film 'desperately seeking susan'.
Madonnas second album, 'like a virgin' was released at the end of 1984. the lead song 'like a virgin' hit number one in december. in 1985 Madonna offically became an international star.
after madonna reached nuber 2 with 'material girl' in 1985 she started her first tour. later that year a erotic drama staring Madonna was realised. both playboy and penthouse realised nude photos that she posed for in 1977.
in august she married actor Sean 'evil' Penn. the couple had a rocky married and in 1989 it all ended.
she had even more hits over the next year but her film was a flop.
in 1988 she spent half the year acting on broadway.
even more hits were to follow like 'like a prayer' from the album of the same name. in april 1990 she began her Blonde Ambition tour with run the intire year.
'vogue' became a number 1 hit in may. this set the stage for her co-starring role in 'Dick Tracy' which was her most sucessful film role since 'Desperately Seeking Susan'.
Madonna released a greatest-hit album, 'the immaculate collection' at the end of the year. it featured a new song 'justify my love' which sparked anger in the public with its sexy video. MTV originanly band the video but finally agreed to show it after 10:00 pm. the second new song that the greatest hits featured was 'rescue me' which became the highest-debuting single by a female artist in american chart history.
in 1992 Madonna released a sex soft-core pornographic book that featured hundreds of erotic photographs of herself, several models and celebrities.
'Erotica' soon followed and sold over 2 million copies.
2 years later her 'bed time stories' album did not impress charts but her single 'take a bow' spent 7 weeks at number one.
in 1995 Madonna stared in the acritically aclaimed film 'Evita' in which many belive she acted well in. the sound track to Evita was completely ballads song by Madonna.
this was to be aimed at the mature audience.
as filming completed madonna anoucenced that she was pregnant and her draughter, Lourdes, was born late in 1996.
when 'Evita' was finaly released madonna won a Golden Globe award for best actress.
in 1998 Madonna released her 'ray of light' album. it received excellent reveiws upon its march release. it was number 2 on the charts upon its release.
this soon became her biggest album since 'like a prayer'.
2 years later Madonna returned with 'music' which Madonna says was one of her favourate songs. 2000 also saw the birth of her second child, Rocco.
Madonna later married Guy Ritchie at the end of the year.
with Madonna as a star and Ritchie as a director the pair made a remake of the film 'swept away' in 2002. the film tanked at the box office.
her 2003 album 'american life' was hardly a huge success. the same year Madonna released her childrens book 'the english roses'. this was quite successful and was followed by four more to come over the years.
Madonna made a long-awaited return with her album 'confessions on a dance floor' which has become a huge success.
Madonna has proven that even at the age of 47 she is still the true Queen of pop.
